Discord transitions its brand away from gaming, focuses on chat for everyone

Discord has long been known for being a communication service with a focus on gaming communities, and at one point, the company even attempted to offer games through its own platform - though that initiative was called off within a year. Despite its focus on gaming, Discord has become a popular platform for all kinds of chats, and that's why today, the team announced new branding for its service, moving away from the gamer-focused lingo.

With the new tagline "Your place to talk", Discord has a new website that does away with almost all the wording related to gaming and focuses on creating communities and general-purpose communication. The team at Discord said its users asked for the platform to be more welcoming to new users, so it changed its language to be more broad, toned down gaming references and jokes in the app, and streamlined the onboarding experience for new users.

The app also has some enhanced capabilities, with server-wide video capabilities and new server templates to make it easier for users to come together and create communities. The team has also increased voice and video capacity by 200%, and there's "hundreds" of bug fixes to account for.

With communication tools becoming so much more prominent over the past few months, it makes sense for Discord to broaden its target audience, especially considering many of its existing users were already not using it for gaming. The company says this is just the beginning of its efforts to make Discord a place for all kinds of users, so we can probably expect more changes later down the line.
