it's all just conjectures; if the plane fell into the ocean as reported in the oilring then why a satellite "pinged" the airplane more then 7h after it take off? then again, if the plane was hijacked (for whatever the reason) then why make such a bold, very dangerous and incredible prone to fail plan? every single theory i've read it has some flaws, so unless the answer to this big mystery is a simple one, we have to wait for the black boxes to find what truly happened.

Ok, but surely they would have an idea of how many 777's with Rolls-Royce engines are in that area capable of producing the ping and then work out how many pings they received (in theory each one is doing it) and then work out if there is one more in that area than they expected?

 

Hopefully, enough lessons will be learned from this so that it will never be repeated.

 

They can start by making it impossible for anyone on board the aircraft to disable the transponder signal and other tracking devices.

You know, maybe it's time to put GPS tracking into each engine (for redundancy) and another one on the jet its self then report that back in semi-real time and retrofit older jets also.... we have the tech to do this now days... heck it would not only keep track of where every jet is, they could use it to plan better routes by data mining, and speed up approach and takeoff (kinda what GE is already implementing with their newer air traffic control system)...

IIRC the RR/Trent engines on the 777 ping their coordinates and condition to home base via satellite at regular intervals, so I don't know how GPS would have improved this. That and the last I heard GPS is starting to be put into avionics packages already.

really? There's been a bunch of "pilots" on TV claiming they only get performance monitoring stats of the engines if they sent coordinates, shouldn't the last pings of help figure out the direction?

Malaysia has agreed to hand over all raw data to the US and UK. No longer will other countries rely on the Malaysian interpretation of the data.

But thank ######ing god, everything the Malaysians have done have been screw ups. Wrong times, wrong path, "oh after 1 week we realized the plane flew over Malaysia and was picked up by our radar" and so on.

That said, I am expecting someone from the government to now deny this and go "Oh we have no reports about us handing over any information" :rolleyes:

The way they found out those pings is looking through "satellite" records and seeing that Satellite was still receiving/seeing pings to that PARTICULAR data box (SATCOM).

Thailand?s military announced Tuesday that it had radar data that seems to corroborate Malaysian military radar data tracking a plane likely to be MH370 flying west over the Malacca Strait.

Why didn?t Thailand release the data before Tuesday? Because it wasn?t specifically asked for it, military officials says.

But if the plane was hijacked, and that's a huge if in my mind, then it'll probably be jam-packed with explosives and used somewhere when the media stops talking about it (I always found it interesting that the 9/11 guys chose the World Trade Center as their first target, as that's not something I would have chosen) - all they would need would just be a mixture of fertilisers and fuel oil, easy to get and cheap; was even used in Oslo 2011 by Anders Behring Brevik

Thanks for that; never knew of the family connection - but I later learned that the World Trade Center was supposedly some sort of a 'figure head' or a symbol for finance; but the movie "Independence Day" wouldn't have been as good it they hadn't used The White House in the movie. As I understand it it's the foreign policy of the USA they were supposedly "protesting" by these attacks, so I'll never know why they didn't attack the White House or even the State Department (and a side note, I think the Pentagon was deliberately blown up and a plane didn't come near it)

From what I've read, there are thousands of 777's in use.

The guests, pilots, experts on the News channels have stated that the so-called pings do not identify any particular plane.

 

Argue with them.

 

It is only a theory that the faint signals came from MH370.

 

The plane had an ACARS system in which information could be bounced off a satellite back to land, but that system had been turned off. Nonetheless ? and here is where it gets technically tricky ? there was still a ?handshake? between the satellite and the plane?s ACARS system. No data was transmitted either way, but the ?handshake? signaled that the plane was still operational. The handshake didn?t reveal location, but did reveal the degree to which the satellite would need to adjust its antenna to receive or transmit data to the plane.

This was late at night.  Many passengers may have been sleeping, listening to music, watching the in-seat videos.

Unless the plane has an active cellphone relay through its own comm systems (which can be turned off in the cockpit anyway), cell phones almost never work in a plane once it's in flight.

 

For one, you're inside a dirty great big Faraday Cage, and for two, cell phones actually have a fairly short range so just aren't going to be able to find a cell tower in flight.
