The Anonymous hacker group is making its presence known again today. News.com reports that the group successfully hacked into the official web site of the BART rapid transit system in San Francisco on Sunday. Anonymous went after the web site as part of a protest against BART. The organization's transit police shot and killed a man in July and last Thursday a demonstration was planned against the police action. However, BART decided to shut down cell phone service at its stations in an attempt to keep the demonstration from happening.
That action got the attention of Anonymous who announced on Saturday plans to go after BART. In a press release Anonymous claimed they would "fill every inbox and fax machine at BART with thousands of copies of our message that this outage was unacceptable." Today they also made good on another threat to shut down the BART web site, at least briefly. They also defaced the site with its Guy Fawkes mask logo. Anonymous had previously announced it would shut down the site for a total of six hours today but the group was unable to reach that timeline; BART had previously warned its users about the attack.
Anonymous has also announced plans to participate in a physical demonstration against BART at the Civic Center Station on Monday in San Francisco. There's no word on what exactly Anonymous has planned but the official BART web site is already warning commuters about possible disruptions to its service on Monday.
