MarkJensen's Blog,
tree-hugging linux-using ex-staffer...
At work we are starting to implement a product improvement to one of our products that used a consumer-grade PC purchased through a standard OEM. The software we run on it runs in XP. It does not run in Vista. We have has some problems with PCs arriving with Vista on them, and a couple of times where the end user has had a hard drive fail, and reload/re-imaging has had problems due to mislocated restore CDs at the customer site.

So, we are taking control of our computing, and going an embedded route, where we have the OS loaded on a CF card (not prone to vibrations and such) and can be easily pre-setup by us, rather than a standard PC OEM install with Google toolbar and other such unnecessary annoyances. Our software will be already set up on it, and ready to go when we receive the units from our integrator.

There are other changes I would like to implement to remove the need for licensing (and accompanying restrictions) with Microsoft. ninja.gif But that is lower on my priority list at the moment. Sort of a "phase 2", if you will.

Well, right now, we just have the PCB booting with cables hanging from it and ty-rapped to a DIN rail "H" frame that we use to temporarily mount the board in the panel.

And, since it is XP Pro, the Windows part pretty much boots the default Microsoft way. We haven't gotten into using the kit to modify startup or such yet, until we get our first unit from our assembler. Then it starts up our program, which pretty much takes over the display and bounces our corporate logo around on a black screen until an event occurs.

Looking at this enclosure.

A Bit About Me...
Previous owner of Win 3.11, 95, 98, 98se, Me (I had to! don't flame me!), NT4 and XP. All legitimate and fully legal (it was an expensive habit!). Before this, I was an Atari computer kind of guy.

Also tried RedHat 5.1 (purchased the boxed set) in the summer of '98 and dual-booted for a while, but I was not ready for Linux (or it wasn't ready for me) at the time, so I left it behind after a few months.

I ran into Windows dissatisfaction again in mid 2002, and downloaded RedHat 7.3. It came a LONG way, and I was happy dual-booting. When 8.0 came out, I decided to completely ditch Windows, as I was using Linux 70% of the time, and having that Windows "crutch" to fall back on prevented me from exercising my Linux legs. I have run 100% Linux at home now since Jan 2003.

At home, I am a father of four young boys (currently ages 6, 8, 11 and 13). I play keyboards (not very well), and enjoy scuba diving - though we haven't gone diving since wife was pregnant with the last two kids. We go on family trips to the mountains. We camp out (mostly just when it is the boys and I), and go on cave trips with our Cub Scout pack. Our kids are active in sports, which makes my wife and I very active in driving to the many practices for each kid, plus their games.

At work, I am a Robotics Engineer. I worked for a company called FANUC Robotics for about four years, then hired into Saturn about 14 years ago (back when it truly was a different kind of company). We have several hundred FANUC robots, and used to have several hundred KUKA robots (which used Win95 as their UI). Most of our robots are used to weld, and/or are used for material handling and transfer. I was also responsible for a couple dozen sealing units that happen to run QNX as their OS, until they were replaced with brand-new units running Windows NT 4.0. The FANUC robots run some sort of custom proprietary OS made by themselves, I believe.

On October 1st, 2008, I accepted a separation package offered by GM as they work on a salaried employee reduction. It is effective on December 1st.
