At work we are starting to implement a product improvement to one of our products that used a consumer-grade PC purchased through a standard OEM. The software we run on it runs in XP. It does not run in Vista. We have has some problems with PCs arriving with Vista on them, and a couple of times where the end user has had a hard drive fail, and reload/re-imaging has had problems due to mislocated restore CDs at the customer site.
So, we are taking control of our computing, and going an embedded route, where we have the OS loaded on a CF card (not prone to vibrations and such) and can be easily pre-setup by us, rather than a standard PC OEM install with Google toolbar and other such unnecessary annoyances. Our software will be already set up on it, and ready to go when we receive the units from our integrator. There are other changes I would like to implement to remove the need for licensing (and accompanying restrictions) with Microsoft. Posted in Category: Computers & Geeky Things

And, since it is XP Pro, the Windows part pretty much boots the default Microsoft way. We haven't gotten into using the kit to modify startup or such yet, until we get our first unit from our assembler. Then it starts up our program, which pretty much takes over the display and bounces our corporate logo around on a black screen until an event occurs. Looking at this enclosure. |
