Google adds an IM sharing feature inside of YouTube, but only for Canadians

Last year, news started coming from inside YouTube which said the company was testing out a new way of sharing and communicating on its popular video platform. Now, that new feature is publicly available, but only if you’re in Canada.

As of today, Canadian YouTube users have a new way to share videos and messages straight from inside the mobile video app. The new sharing option functions similarly to the old function that allowed you to forward video outside of the app, but it now keeps the entire interaction inside YouTube’s ecosystem.

Hitting the share button will let you start conversations with people in your contact list, which act very much like IM conversations in other apps. You can even create group chats. It’s very much a new messaging client on your phone.

There’s no clear info on when the new feature might show up in other countries, with YouTube saying it’s launching in Canada first because Canadians share 15% percent more than other users around the world

Still, if you really want to try the new feature for yourself you can, if you trick ask a Canadian to add you to one of their conversations. Once you accept, you’ll be able to use the feature yourself.
