Google this Wednesday pushed Chrome OS 76 to the stable channel, making it widely available to Chromebook owners. The new update brings with it improved media controls, accessibility features, Google account management and, most interestingly, virtual desktop capability.
The virtual desktop feature, which the company has dubbed Virtual Desks, has been under work since at least February of this year, and it's now been finally pushed to the stable channel. Virtual Desks currently only supports the use of four simultaneous desktops. Mysteriously, the addition has not been included in the official release notes from Google.
Alongside this, there are accessibility improvements for people with motor or dexterity challenges. Thanks to the new Automatic Clicks feature, such users can simply leave the pointer over an item for a given time and Chrome OS will automatically register a click. Right-clicking and drag and drop are also supported in a similar way.
To top it all off, the company is also improving media controls for its OS. The change is similar to the Global Media Controls the company has already added to its Chrome browser, and affords you access to media controls for each individual app or tab that is playing audio right from the system menu.
Managing your different Google accounts is now easier with the update, and the company has aggregated it all under the Google Accounts pane in Settings. A number of bug fixes are also included in this release.
Google's blog post notes that the update will be rolling out to users slowly, so not all Chromebooks will be receiving the update immediately; you'll just have to be patient until yours finally does.
