Twitter has announced that it’s bringing Twitter Lite to an additional 21 countries, bringing the total to 45. Twitter Lite is designed to minimise data usage, load quickly on slower networks, and take up less space on devices. In the previous rollout, several countries from Asia, Africa, and South America received the app, and now with this update, it arrives in several European countries too.
In its statement, Twitter’s Product Manager, Jesar Shah, said:
“Today we are excited to announce we’re expanding to 21 more countries including ... Algeria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Ghana, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Romania, Serbia, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, Uruguay, Venezuela, Yemen, and Zimbabwe.”
Twitter Lite has an install size of just 3MB and loads quickly on 2G and 3G networks. In order to help limit your data usage, you can enable data saver which lets you individually select the images and videos that you’d like to load in order to conserve data consumption. Another neat feature is Bookmarks, this allows you to save a Tweet for later if you have a patchy internet connection and want to view the content later.
Lastly, Tweet threads are now available through the Lite client, which was introduced back in December last year. In order to use threads on Twitter Lite, use the plus button in the composer so you can “connect your thoughts and publish” the thread of Tweets at the same time, making them easy to read.
