BT to launch faster broadband

British Telecom have announced plans to quadruple current broadband speeds from March 31st by adding BT ADSL Max and Premium to their current range of services.

At present BT only offer a 2Mbps service, but the upgrade will see 78% of subscribers upgrading from 2Mbps to 4Mbps, over 42% to get 6Mbps and those closest to their exchange will be able to receive 8Mbps broadband access.

The plans will see the telecommunications giant upgrading 5,300 exchanges accross the UK as well as improvements to the stability of their service.

The move comes after other internet service providers put pressure on BT by offering much higher speeds. One such company is city-based be broadband, who offer those in urban locations speeds of up to 24Mbps downstream.

BT have also announced upstream upgrades of 448Kbps and 832Kbps for their ADSL Max and Premium packages respectively.
