Microsoft announces the first major update to Office.com

Microsoft today announced a major update to Office.com, which began rolling out this month and will continue into 2017. The new features are meant to offer you easier access to your frequently and recently viewed documents and apps.

As you can see, the new design puts your most frequently used apps right up front. Microsoft says that over time, those will change to reflect which ones you use the most.

You'll also see new controls in the recent documents section, which will allow you to filter them by document type, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.

Another new feature is the ability to see upcoming events. This is integrated with Skype for Business, so you'll be able to join a call with a click. Microsoft says that the feature will "help you keep track of your different teams and projects."

Finally, tasks from Outlook will work directly from Office.com, allowing you to create, view, and complete them. Double-clicking on them will bring you to Outlook Tasks to add additional details.

All of the features that were added in the update cannot be manually edited; for example, you cannot change the order of the app tiles, or remove different sections like online documents, upcoming or tasks.
