Nokia 1 with Android Go launched in India for ₹5499

HMD Global unveiled five new phones at the Mobile World Congress 2018 last month, and the cheapest smartphone among those was the Nokia 1 powered by Android Oreo (Go Edition). The device has now been launched in India for a price of ₹5499 ($85) and will be available starting tomorrow.

The Nokia 1 features entry-level hardware specifications, which include a 1.1GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6737M chipset, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage with micro-SD expansion, a 4.5-inch 480p display, a 5MP rear camera that records 480p video, a 2MP front camera, and a 2,150mAh battery. Although these are absolutely low-end specs, Android Go, which is designed for devices with less than 1GB of RAM, should work fine. HMD Global has also launched the Xpress-on covers for the Nokia 1 in India, which are priced at ₹450 ($7) each.

The smartphone is expected to face tough competition from similarly priced Xiaomi devices, which offer better underlying hardware. However, HMD Global has partnered with India's largest 4G carrier, Jio, to provide a ₹2200 cashback incentive with the Nokia 1 along with an additional 60GB of data which could make the effective price of the device cheaper for users of the network.
