Android TV gets home screen recommendations, faster subscriptions

Google's operating system for set-top boxes, Android TV, doesn't get major new features all that often, and even the Android 10 update released last year didn't include a ton of changes. However, the company announced a couple of improvements for Android TV today, with a focus on making it easier to discover new content.

For starters, the software will now show you recommendations on the home screen, which can be accessed by moving up from the main app row. The recommendations sections feature a number of items and it's possible to see trailers for the recommended shows or content without leaving the home screen experience.

Google has also made it faster to sign up for new subscription services such as Starz and DC Universe. Instead of asking you to fill in your data using the remote to navigate a virtual keyboard, Google will automatically set you up using the information from your Google account, which should make the process a lot faster. The feature is being tested in the United States with only a handful of apps for now, but more will come in the future.

While Android TV hasn't received a lot of major changes, there have been some rumors regarding the platform in recent months. Google has been reported to be rebranding the platform to Google TV, and a dongle codenamed Sabrina was leaked back in June, though neither of those things have materialized yet.
