It was only a few months ago that Google's SVP of hardware and creator of the Pixel smartphones, Rick Osterloh, told those attending a private meeting that a successor to the Pixel would arrive later in the year. Although there is still quite some time until its release, there appears to be new information that reveals the details about its specifications.
According to the folks at XDA Developers, a trustworthy source has spilled the beans on the upcoming devices - giving details about its display sizes, processor, RAM configurations, and more.
Judging by the newly revealed information, it is possible that the 'taimen' handset could offer a look that will be a bit more tantalizing, since it could arrive with a 5.9-inch 1440p OLED display provided by LG. This bit about LG supplying the panels is important because it could be related to a report from a couple of months ago that stated Google was able to secure flexible OLED screens from the firm.
Beyond just offering a larger display, it will also sport thinner bezels than what can be currently found on the Pixel XL. It will arrive with a massive 128GB of onboard storage but it is unknown at this time whether there will be other options available. The upcoming device will be powered by Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 835 processor and will have 4GB RAM. The rear will have a similar design, utilizing a glass panel, but it will not surround the fingerprint reader like on the current model. Although dual cameras have become quite the trend this year, Google's next Pixel will stick to a single lens and have a dual LED flash.
For the smaller 'walleye', surprisingly, the device will remain nearly identical in looks to the current Pixel and will arrive with a 4.97-inch 1080p display. While it will have the same thick bezels on the top and bottom, that space will now be used to house dual front firing speakers. Unfortunately, with the dual speakers comes a sacrifice, and that means the smaller Pixel will not arrive with a 3.5mm headphone jack. As for other specifications - the handset will offer the same Snapdragon 835 and 4GB RAM as its larger sibling but will come with less storage space at 64GB.
While these types of things tend to change, the folks at XDA Developers are fairly confident with their source, stating that these specifications will not change. Naturally, we will just have to wait and see. Although there isn't a confirmed date, Google is expected to make an announcement about their upcoming handsets sometime in the winter.
