Support for Ubuntu 17.04 Zesty Zapus will be coming to an end this Saturday, nine months after being pushed out. The end of life applies to all systems no matter whether you’re running it on a desktop or a server. Once the end of life date arrives, you should have a plan to move to Ubuntu 17.10 or downgrade to Ubuntu 16.04.
If you’re looking to do a clean install of Ubuntu 17.10, you’ll have to wait until Thursday when Canonical reinstates the download option which it had to disable several weeks ago due to an issue which corrupted some PCs’ BIOS.
Zesty Zapus was quite a notable release for two reasons; firstly, it was the last release to ship with Unity 7, which Canonical had been bundling with Ubuntu since 2011; secondly, it was the last release before Canonical had to reset the alphabet in the codename system. Other than that, the release was a bit lackluster. Zapus did stop creating swap partitions on systems with enough RAM and shipped with Linux Kernel 4.10, updated packages, and a new wallpaper, but not a lot else.
The new version of Ubuntu will be released in April and it’ll also be a Long Term Support edition. Canonical plans to support Ubuntu 18.04 until 2023 and it'll likely boast the lion's share of Ubuntu usage among the supported versions as people move over from Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and Ubuntu 17.10.
