Sea of Thieves: Cursed Sails major content update lands July 31, trailer out now

The second major content update for Sea of Thieves, following The Hungering Deep, just received a rather hefty teaser trailer, which can be seen above. Arriving with the title Cursed Sails, the event is bringing about skeleton crews that man their own ships, and it looks like pirates will need to battle these NPC ships in order to protect Outposts.

As also evident by the trailer, a new three-man ship is incoming with the update, the Brigantine, adding onto the two and four-player vessels already available in the game. Players from multiple crews will also be able to form alliances, but how exactly will this work was not explained.

Here's how Rare describes the new threat and how it will affect the world:

Cursed Sails will change things forever on the Sea of Thieves, as the sails you see cresting the horizon are no longer guaranteed to be other players making their own way through the world. The decks beneath those masts may now be manned by skeletal marauders returned to the seas from their restless graves. All that sustains these grinning terrors is a thirst for battle that leads them to terrorise Outposts and call out defenders to face them on the tides…

Just as with the Megalodon hunt in the previous content update, Cursed Sails will employ a time-limited campaign to ease players into the new elements, with various rewards also up for grabs to those who tackle it. However, know that all the new features will remain a part of the game even after the event comes to a close.

Sea of Thieves: Cursed Sails update is slated to land on July 31 for both Xbox One and Windows 10 players. Beyond this, Rare is also planning to launch the Forsaken Shores major update sometime in September, which is slated to bring about rowboats as well as a whole new volcanic region to explore.
