Amazon held a hardware event just a couple of weeks ago, but the company already has new devices coming up. The company today announced a new Fire HD 10 tablet, alongside a Kids Edition.
The "all-new" Fire HD 10 tablet features many of the same specs as its predecessors, including a 1920x1200 10.1-inch display, 2GB of RAM, and either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, with support for microSD cards. It has a new octa-core processor clocked at 2GHz, support for 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and fast charging via USB Type-C. That battery can last you up to 12 hours, which is more than the 10 hours of the 2017 model. It has support for Dolby Atmos audio too.
It also has a new picture-in-picture mode, so you can watch videos while doing something else. Supported apps include Twitch, Prime Video, and Netflix. It also, of course, supports Alexa hands-free. Just like previous models, it costs $149.99, and it's available for pre-order now, with a planned release on October 30. It'll be available in Plum, Twilight Blue, Black, and a new White color.
As usual, Amazon has also announced a Kids Edition of the new tablet, which shares most of the same specs, but comes with a case to protect from drops that are bound to happen in the hands of kids. The case can also serve as a kickstand, and it comes in either blue, pink, or purple. In addition to that, it comes with a one-year subscription to Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, which includes content tailored for children. The Fire HD 10 Kids Edition costs $199.99, or you can buy two for $349.98. It's also shipping on October 30.
What's not as usual, though, is the new Kindle Kids Edition, which aims to make reading more accessible for children. It's the same 10th generation, 6-inch Kindle with an e-ink display at 167ppi, but comes with a kid-friendly case and, again, a one-year subscription to FreeTime Unlimited. On the Kindle, this will offer books such as the Harry Potter franchise and Bridge to Terabithia.
It also has features like achievements, which should help children feel rewarded for reading, and a Word Wise feature that provides short definitions for difficult words automatically. There's also a dictionary and a vocabulary builder. Just like the other devices, it'll begin shipping on October 30, and it costs $109.99. It comes with your choice of blue, pink, rainbow birds, or space station covers.
Amazon also announced that FreeTime Unlimited is now available on Echo Show devices, as well as some Fire TV models. These include the second-generation Fire TV Stick, the Fire TV Stick 4K, as well as both first and second generations of the standard Fire TV.
