Facebook's latest moves regarding Instagram seem to be centered around providing a safe space for its users. To that end, it announced efforts to protect kids from adults, a tool to filter offensive DMs, and the ability to add pronouns on profiles, among other things. Now, it is adding content sensitivity controls to the platform.
The new feature is called Sensitive Content Control, and is supposed to do exactly what the name suggests. It is designed to moderate the content that you see in the Explore section. Instagram has a set of guidelines about what content is allowed on the platform, and hate speech and bullying is prohibited under it. While some posts do not break its rules, such as those that are sexually suggestive or violent, Instagram is introducing a new configuration to enable you to restrict such content in the Explore section.
Instagram says:
This new feature gives you control over sensitive content. You can decide to leave things as they are or you can adjust the Sensitive Content Control to see more or less of some types of sensitive content. We recognize that everybody has different preferences for what they want to see in Explore, and this control will give people more choice over what they see.
The setting can be accessed from Profile > Settings > Account > Sensitive Content Control. You'll notice that the default filter is set to "Limit". If you want to see more sensitive content, you can change this configuration to "Allow", or "Limit Even More" if you want the opposite. It is important to note that the "Allow" option is not available to account holders under 18 years of age.
