App category changes coming to Google Play in the next two months

Google is hard at work improving its Google Play app store. Just recently, Google rolled out the app-sharing Family Library feature and found a way to reduce data consumption when updating apps on Google Play. While those changes make life better for users interacting with apps they already own, Google's latest change to its Play store will help Android users discover new and relevant apps better than before.

Google's own Sarah Karam, part of Google Play Apps Business Development, reported on the company's Android Developers Blog to discuss a few important changes regarding how apps will be categorized within Google Play. Within the next 60 days, Google Play will have new and renamed categories to help group similar apps together in modern, relevant ways. When the changes are applied, the new categories will be:

  • Art & Design
  • Auto & Vehicles
  • Beauty
  • Dating
  • Events
  • Food & Drink
  • House & Home
  • Parenting (yes, there are apps for this)

In addition to these new categories, the current "Transportation" category is being changed to "Maps & Navigation" while the "Media & Video" category is changing to "Video Players & Editors". Unless something changes in the next two months, many of the other popular categories on Google Play will remain unchanged. Google has a step-by-step process that developers can follow in the event they'd like to play around with re-labeling their apps with the new categories.
