Many of the most popular shooter franchises nowadays have a mobile version for on-the-go players ranging from Fortnite to Call of Duty, and even Apex Legends will be joining in on the action soon. Now, EA and DICE have announced that the Battlefield franchise is entering the mobile space for the first time.

This yet-to-be-named mobile entry is being developed by Industrial Toys with support from DICE. It will be "a fully-fledged, skill-based experience" according to the announcement. The game is still in its testing phases, and an official launch is planned for sometime in 2022 across mobile and tablet devices. Going by other popular games in this space, it is likely to be a free-to-play venture as well.

Moreover, DICE called the mobile title a completely standalone experience, so don't expect any cross-play capabilities with the next-generation mainline Battlefield game.

Meanwhile, DICE, DICE LA, Criterion Games, and Electronic Arts Gothenberg studios are working on this upcoming next-gen entry, dubbed Battlefield 6 by fans, making it the largest development team ever to work on a Battlefield game. DICE general manager Oskar Gabrielson added this regarding the ambitious project:

It has everything we love about Battlefield – and takes all of it to the next level. Epic scale. All-out military warfare. Crazy, unexpected moments. Game-changing destruction. Massive battles, packed with more players and mayhem than ever before. All brought to life with the power of next-gen consoles and PCs.

Going by his words, it sounds like Battlefield 6 will skip out on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 just as some rumors have said. A full reveal of the game will arrive "soon" according to the studio.
