John McAfee, the founder of the McAfee antivirus company, has been found dead in his cell in the Barcelona prison Brians 2 Penitentiary, according to a report from El Pais. The 75-year-old, who has allegedly hanged himself, was due to be extradited to the United States which had accused him of evading millions of dollars worth of taxes from activities including cryptocurrency trading.

McAfee has been in jail in Spain since October 4 following his arrest at the El Prat airport at 9:30 a.m. the day before. He was about to fly to Istanbul, Turkey at the time of his arrest. Law enforcement focused their efforts to arrest him at Spanish airports because he snapped a photo of himself after landing in Reus, Tarragona following a trip to Germany in a private jet.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Justice unsealed an indictment against John McAfee and the advisor on his cryptocurrency team. The two accused were facing several different charges which in total carried prison sentences of up to 100 years as well as financial penalties.

Upon finding McAfee in his cell, the prison guards and medical services attempted to provide aid but were not able to stop him from dying.
