Opera unveils Reborn 3 desktop user interface overhaul

Opera Software has announced the first developer version of its “new” Opera browser dubbed R3 or Reborn 3. The firm teased the update last week as “the new standard”. According to the company, R3 is the “world’s first Web 3-ready desktop browser” - it’s a bit unclear what that really means though.

When you launch the newly designed browser, you’ll notice that it has a new light and dark theme, both designed to stay out of the way, drawing your attention to the web content instead. The theme has been made a bit calmer with the removal of unnecessary dividing lines between sections that cause distractions. Essentially, Opera Software wants its browser to be like a photo frame where there’s not much going on around the edges but attention is drawn to the art or the web page in this case.

In order to make the browser chrome less cluttered, the firm decided to move the screenshot tool into the URL bar so that’s it’s near other useful tools such as “Send to My Flow” and bookmarks. Important browser settings are now easy to access with EasySetup which is to the right of the URL bar. From this section, you can alter the theme, add custom wallpapers, change the appearance of other aspects of the browser, toggle ad blocking and My Flow, change the downloads location, clear browsing data, import and manage passwords and bookmarks, and make Opera the default browser. There’s also another button which will open up the full browser settings.

Lastly, Opera Software bundled its previously announced Crypto Wallet with the latest developer preview. To use this feature, you’ll need to pair your desktop wallet with your Opera for Android browser. Opera’s Crypto Wallet is restricted to storing Ethereum tokens and other collectibles and the firm says that you shouldn’t use it for storing large sums.

Here are the downloads if you want to try out the new preview: Windows (Portable version), macOS, and Linux (deb, RPM).
