GDC plans a replacement summer event in August

Amidst all the event cancellations due to coronavirus fears, one postponed convention is already planning a replacement event for later in the year. Game Developers Conference organizers have announced that GDC Summer, a shorter three-day convention, is now planned to kick off on August 4 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

Even though the date is months away, it is a rather hopeful timetable considering the current coronavirus situation, especially since San Francisco is locked down right now. The organizers say that the new event will be a unique experience that will "retain the same high level of expert-led talks as the traditional GDC, along with a freestyle two-day expo show floor August 5th and 6th."

The organizers added that safety is a paramount concern for them and that they will "continue to monitor the latest information from health officials to ensure a safe and compelling event for everyone at GDC Summer, GDC 2021 and beyond."

If the original plans had gone through, GDC 2020 would have taken place this week. Some companies like Microsoft and Sony have already moved their GDC presentations to the online space, while on Steam, many indie game demos that were supposed to be on the ground at GDC are available to try out digitally.
