Instagram gains a new head in the form of Adam Mosseri

Last week saw the sudden departure of Instagram's co-founders, Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom, from the company. Today, it has been announced that Adam Mosseri, the current Vice President of Product at the company, will take over as its head.

Before his position at Instagram, Mosseri , who joined Facebook in 2008, was a VP there, managing the News Feed and interface design teams. In May, however, he moved over to Instagram as part of Mark Zuckerberg's restructuring of the company's leadership.

In a press release, Krieger and Systrom formally announced their departure from Instagram, placing emphasis on Mosseri's qualifications as their replacement.

"We are thrilled to hand over the reins to a product leader with a strong design background and a focus on craft and simplicity — as well as a deep understanding of the importance of community. These are the values and principles that have been essential to us at Instagram since the day we started, and we’re excited for Adam to carry them forward."

So far, Instagram has largely operated independently since its $1 billion acquisition in 2012, without having much to do with Facebook on the front-end of things. Given Mosseri's near-decade long involvement with Facebook, that may be set to change, with more possible integrations between the two services.
