Man dressed as Apple Genius walks into New York Apple Store and steals 19 iPhones

The New York Police Department is on the lookout for a bold thief who casually helped himself to thousands of dollars' worth of iPhones from an Apple Store last week.

As DNA Info reports, a man "dressed similarly" to employees - presumably wearing one of the familiar blue T-shirts worn by Apple Geniuses, emblazoned with the company's logo - entered the Apple Store in SoHo around 5:30pm on June 1.

He then headed to an electronics repair room, where he removed 19 iPhones from a drawer - worth a total of over $16,000 - before passing them on to an accomplice. The second man then hid the phones 'under his shirt' before the two of them then exited the store.

The T-shirts worn by Apple Store staff aren't difficult to acquire, and are often sold on eBay and other online marketplaces, along with unofficial replicas that are similar in appearance.

The NYPD's investigation is ongoing.
