MediaTek introduces Dimensity 900 with sub-6GHz 5G, 120Hz refresh rate support

MediaTek has announced a new member of its chipset family, the Dimensity 900, aimed at higher-end mid-range smartphones - not to be confused with premium flagship phones where you'd find the Dimensity 1200 or 1100. Like those chips, the Dimensity 900 is based on a 6nm process from TSMC, so it's still very modern in that regard.

The Dimensity 900 does aim to bring some of those premium features to a more affordable price range, though. It supports 5G connectivity, though only sub-6GHz and not mmWave, as well as every older generation of mobile network back to 2G. It also supports carrier aggregation, DSS, and true dual-SIM 5G.

Beyond 5G, the chipset supports plenty of technologies you can find in high-end phones today, like Wi-Fi 6, LPDDR5 RAM, UFS 3.1 storage, Full HD+ 120Hz displays, and 108MP cameras. It also features MediaTek's Imagiq 5.0 image signal processor with support for 4K HDR video recording, MiraVision display enhancements, and the HyperEngine gaming engine.

As for performance, the Dimensity 900 is an octa-core chip, but only two of those cores are high-performance ones. They're Cortex-A78 cores running at up to 2.4GHz, and there are six power-efficient Cortex-A55 that can run at up to 2GHz. For graphics, it includes a Mali-G68 MC4 GPU, and there's also a third-generation AI processing unit.

The MediaTek Dimensity 900 is expected to show up in phones starting in the second quarter of the year, meaning we should see phones announced with this chipset soon.
