One of the most common complaints about Microsoft's Edge browser on Windows 10 is the lack of extensions support - but this feature is on the way. Indeed, Windows Insiders have been able to try out early examples of extensions since preview build 14291 was released in March, and the latest additions arrived just a few days ago.
So far, though, Edge extensions support has been limited to PCs and tablets - and Microsoft has remained tight-lipped about possible plans to extend that support to phones as well.
But as MicrosoftInsider.es spotted today, the cat is now officially out of the bag. Microsoft published a Windows 10 feature roadmap last month, and it's now been updated with confirmation that extensions support is coming to Edge on Windows 10 Mobile.
The important bit is shown here, but you can also see it for yourself on Microsoft's Windows 10 roadmap page. The 'Microsoft Edge - Extensions' entry under the 'In Public Preview' section on that page accurately notes that the feature is currently only available to Insiders on PC and tablets. But the entry under the 'In Development' section includes an icon (circled in red in the image above) for phones/handheld devices.
But although we now have the confirmation that Edge extensions are indeed being worked on for Windows 10 Mobile handsets, it remains unclear how advanced Microsoft's development efforts are in that area.
We don't yet know if the company intends to roll out that feature as part of its Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update this summer, and there's no indication yet either of when the first Edge extensions will be available for Windows Insiders to try out on their phones.
Update: Well, the plot thickens. Microsoft has now amended the roadmap again, removing not just the reference to Edge extensions on phones, but the entire entry for Edge extensions - including PCs and tablets - from the 'in development' section of the roadmap. This seems like an odd move, given that we know Edge extensions remain in development for PCs - but we'll keep an eye on things, and keep you posted.
