Tesla's electric vehicles are gaining a new feature that will improve their ability to identify road signs. The automaker has released a new update to Autopilot that, among others, enables it to detect speed limit signs using the vehicle's camera.
The new feature is called "Speed Assist Improvements", part of the 2020.36 software update, which should make your car stick to speed limits more accurately than before. Autopilot will display the detected speed limit signs in the driving visualization. The signs will also be used to set the associated Speed Limit Warning. You can go to Controls > Autopilot > Speed Limit in order to change the Speed Assist settings.
Another new feature of the system produces a chime sound when the traffic light turns green. In case there’s a car in front of you, the notification sound won't play until that vehicle moves forward. To adjust this setting, you can simply go to Controls > Autopilot > Green Traffic Light Chime. Keep in mind that it's still up to the driver "to observe their environment and make decisions accordingly".
Finally, there are new cruise set speed improvements that allow you to "adjust the Traffic-Aware Cruise Control or Autosteer set speed to the current speed by simply tapping the cluster speedometer". As with most other updates from Tesla, this one is rolling out in phases and may take a few weeks before reaching every vehicle.
