Yezz changes tune on Windows 10 Mobile upgrades, claims the OS needs 8GB storage

Yezz unveiled its first two Windows Phones last June, with a third model joining its range earlier this year. Last week, the company said it would upgrade all three devices to Windows 10 Mobile, beginning this fall, and that it would eventually launch new devices running Microsoft's latest mobile OS.

However, Yezz contacted Windows Blog Italia - the publication that first reported on its comments regarding the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade - with an important clarification.

Contrary to its earlier statement, Yezz now says its Billy 4 won't get Windows 10 Mobile

In an email, Marion Chaparro, PR and Communication Manager for Yezz, delivered the bad news that - contrary to what the company had previously stated - its entry-level Billy 4 handset will not be upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile. The reason?

“Billy 4 ha 4GB di memoria ROM. E per supportare l’aggiornamento a Windows 10, lo smartphone ha bisogno di 8GB ROM. Ecco il motivo per cui lo smartphone Billy 4 non sarà aggiornato a Windows 10.”

Rough translation: The Billy 4 has 4GB of ROM storage. And to support the upgrade to Windows 10, the smartphone needs at least 8GB. This is the reason that the Billy 4 won't be upgraded to Windows 10.

Curiously, though, Microsoft's own documentation, which it first published in July, shows that the OS actually support devices with only 4GB of onboard storage:

On the face of it, this appears to undermine Yezz's position. Of course, it's also possible that there is a more subtle and specific technical reason for the Billy 4 being unable to support Windows 10 Mobile which it hasn't fully explained yet.

But it's worth bearing in mind too that manufacturers are under no obligation to upgrade all (or any) of their devices to the new OS, and it seems inevitable that other handsets will also be left behind. British hardware brand KAZAM, for example, recently said that none of its existing Windows Phones will be upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile.
