Motorola's parent company, Lenovo, teased its concept for an air-to-air charging system that can charge multiple phones remotely earlier this year. Today, the company announced a new partnership meant to advance its goal of making that technology a practical reality.
Motorola has teamed up with GuRu to add support for over-the-air wireless charging to its smartphones. GuRu specializes in customizable, over-the-air power systems using "millimeter-wave integrated circuits, modules and proprietary Smart RF Lensing technology". The new alliance is especially interesting since Motorola typically skips adding support for wireless charging to its devices. Now, it's making a big leap by investing in a charging tech designed to juice up a phone without even placing it on a charging pad.
GuRu's RF Lensing, in particular, will be used to power Motorola's devices from across the room. The tech uses a miniature power transfer system to transmit power at long range and with precision. Beyond these pieces of information, the two companies didn't provide many details about the partnership such as when the system will be rolled out.
Motorola isn't the only company dabbling in this new space. Xiaomi made a bold move earlier this year when it unveiled the Mi Air Charge, its concept for an over-the-air charging system that would use space positioning and energy transmissions to remotely charge a device. That said, it may take some time before the technology gains wide adoption.
