First impressions with AOC's portable USB Type-C monitor

USB Type-C is quite a versatile port and has become common in a number of different modern devices, and it is clear that it will only become more popular as time progresses. It is because of this versatility that manufacturers are able to produce new kinds of accessories. It was towards the tail end of last year that AOC debuted a new portable USB Type-C 15.6-inch monitor.

As the USB Type-C standard is capable of carrying not just data but also power, this monitor is powered by the device it is connected to, and it could be a perfect companion unit for someone who needs more screen real estate while on the go.

Mind you, the AOC I1601FWUX isn't the most powerful monitor on the market but it is slim measuring in at 8.5mm and it weighs in at 800 grams. In order to get everything into a compact package, there are some sacrifices like the power button doubling as a multi-function menu button.

If one wishes to change a few settings on the monitor, it requires them to tap the power button and wait for a few seconds in order for a menu option to be selected. Changing another option requires the same process to be repeated. As you can imagine, this is quite tedious but is a necessary evil for things to stay compact. Luckily, the settings seem to retain themselves despite the device being unplugged.

As far as other details of the monitor go, the max resolution is 1920x1080, has a 700:1 contrast ratio, 5ms response time at 60Hz, and can be used in either portrait or landscape.

The monitor also comes with a travel case that doubles as a stand. But "case" is a bit of stretch here, as it more of a protective cover. The cover can be folded and has magnetic portions that are meant to adhere to the back of the monitor. Unfortunately, the magnetic portions are incredibly weak and even the slightest touch will cause your monitor to come crashing down. This is something to be aware of and you'll probably want to have the monitor angled so that it falls back to prevent damage.

The AOC monitor will be put through its paces this week with a full review coming soon. If you have any questions, be sure to leave them down below. If interested, you can head to the AOC website for more information. The monitor can be purchased from Amazon for $209.99.
