Western Digital and SanDisk announce 4TB portable SSDs

Western Digital and its subsidiary SanDisk typically have some pretty interesting products to show off at CES, having previously shown an 8TB portable SSD and a 1TB flash drive, for example. This year, the companies are staying a bit more grounded with the introduction of real products, launching a new lineup of 4TB portable SSDs, the first with that capacity from the company.

The 4TB offerings come from a variety of product families, targeting different use cases and usage scenarios. First, and most affordable, is the My Passport SSD, featuring read speeds up to 1,050MB/s and write speeds up to 1,000MB/s. It features an all-metal body and a variety of colors, though only the black model is listed for the 4TB capacity. This model will cost $679.99.

From the gaming-oriented WD_BLACK line, the WD_BLACK P50 Game Drive SSD is also getting a 4TB model. This model features read speeds up to 2,000MB/s, which should help with loading times for games. The new 4TB variant will cost $749.99.

As for the SanDisk brand, it's bringing 4TB variants of its rugged SSDs, the SanDisk Extreme and Extreme Pro. The former features read speeds up to 1,050MB/ and write speeds up to 1,000MB/s, while the Pro model doubles that to 2,000MB/s for both reads and writes. The drives feature drop protection up to two meters and IP55 water and dust resistance. The SanDisk Extreme will cost $699 for the 4TB model, while the Extreme Pro will go for $899.99.

All of the models will be available sometime this calendar quarter, though a specific date wasn't given.
