Sony announces Airpeak S1 drone tailored for its Alpha series cameras

Sony Airpeak S1 drone

Sony has just introduced its professional drone dubbed the Airpeak S1. As per the Japanese company, the Airpeak S1 is the world's smallest drone that can fly with a full-size mirrorless Alpha camera onboard.

The drone is equipped with a proprietary motor and a 17" propeller for stable flight even during windy conditions. Sony claims that the drone has a lightweight yet sturdy body. The Airpeak has a maximum speed of 55 miles per hour (90km/h). It can withstand wind speeds of up to 44.7mph.

It uses image sensors, Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), barometric pressure, and infrared ranging to optimize the flight path. There's an Electric Speed Controller (ESC) for high maneuverability and an obstacle detection system to avoid mishaps.

The Airpeak S1 is compatible with Sony's Alpha 7S series, Alpha 7R series, and the Alpha 9 series. The latest Alpha 1 capable of shooting footage in 8k is also compatible with this drone.

Sony's Airpeak Base web application enables users to create flight plans and check the vitals of the drone before the next flight. Sony claims that it is possible to make the drone fly along a predetermined route without real-time input. Customers can use the Android and iOS companion app to track the drone, check battery status, and even access gimbal settings. The drone offers a dual operation mode that enables one user to control the drone while the other operates the camera.

The Airpeak S1 drone is priced at $9,000 and will ship to customers in the fall of 2021. The retail package includes an additional set of propellers. However, users will have to purchase a gimbal separately. As per Sony, the drone is made in Japan and comes with an Airpeak Protect Plan, which covers accidental damage.
