Today's Nintendo Direct brought a ton of news for Nintendo Switch owners, and one of the big highlights was the lineup of titles coming from Square Enix. In addition to the previously announced Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition, which is releasing today on Nintendo's hybrid console, a lot more titles in the franchise are on the way.
First off, the spin-off Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, originally launched on the Nintendo GameCube, is being remastered for the Switch. The title is a cooperative action role-playing game that features real-time fights, something that makes it stand out from most of the titles in the franchise. The remastered version includes a new online multiplayer mode that allows up to four people to play together from a distance. There are also new areas inside dungeons, so even if you've played the original, you may find something new here. The title will launch sometime next year.
Square Enix is also bringing World of Final Fantasy, a 2016 title that launched on the PlayStation 4 and Vita, to the Nintendo Switch in the form of World of Final Fantasy Maxima. The Switch version has a new feature called Avatar Change, which lets players transform into well-known characters from the franchise. The game will launch on November 6.
Yet another title being ported over to the Switch is Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon, which was originally launched in 2007. The new version is being called Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon EVERY BUDDY, and it allows the player to befriend all the monsters in the game. There's also a new cooperative mode you can play by sharing the Joy-Con controllers. This title will launch sometime this winter.
But all of those titles seem fairly minor compared to what Square Enix has prepared for 2019. Even though not many details were provided, the company will be bringing many titles to Nintendo's hybrid console. Starting with Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, which is making its debut on Nintendo hardware. The Switch version will include a number of new features, such as a new Speed Mode which lets players make their way through the game faster. The game will launch in 2019, but so will Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy IX, and Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster, all of which will be released later that year.
That's a very large number of ports of older titles coming to the Nintendo Switch, which may be a great way for fans of the franchise to relive their favorite moments. But perhaps what's most interesting about this news is the potential for future support from Square Enix for Nintendo's hybrid console.
