Hot on the heels on the news that Hulu is putting itself up for sale, the streaming TV show and movie service has just launched its free app for a number of Android based smartphones. The official Hulu blog has posted word that six Android phones can currently run the Hulu app; the Nexus One, the Nexus S, the HTC Inspire 4G, the Motorola Droid II, the Motorola Droid X, and the Motorola Atrix. The app will be added on other Android phones "throughout the year." Of course the app will only work if you have a subscription to the Hulu Plus service which costs $7.99 a month.
The launch of the Hulu Plus app for the Android OS mirrors how one of the company's main rivals Netflix has also recently released its Android app for its streaming video service with just a few smartphones supported at first with others added in the mix later on.
As we reported earlier this week, Hulu has now hired a couple of investment bankers to see if the company can be sold. The move follows an unsolicited bid to buy the company (which may or may not have been Yahoo) for an unknown amount. The move means that the three media companies that own most of Hulu's stock, NBCUniversal, Disney's ABC unit and News Corporation's Fox unit, want to sell off their interest in the video company, possibly because the free TV shows that are available on the service are cutting in on the revenues of cable companies and networks.
