Power BI On-premises data gateway gets November update

Earlier this month, Microsoft introduced the November update for Power BI Desktop, bringing a host of new changes including a modern ribbon preview and more. A few days after that, the tech giant unveiled this month's version for the Power BI Developer community, introducing new embed capabilities among other updates.

Now, the latest update for On-premises data gateway for Power BI has been released. As opposed to last month, when the list of changes was a bit more extensive, only a couple of major improvements have been brought in November, including the ability to change a gateway's recovery key and a new version of the mashup engine.

As far as the mashup engine is concerned, it has now been brought in line with this month's release for Power BI Desktop. Essentially, this means that reports being published or getting refreshed via the gateway will now go through the same query execution logic/runtime as in the Desktop version.

Moreover, the recovery key delivered by gateway admins during the installation of On-premises data gateway in standard mode could not be changed before. Now, this restriction has been removed, meaning that different keys can now be utilized to subsequently create symmetric keys. However, there are still some limitations. With Power Apps and Power Automate, connections will not be automatically encrypted with the new key, and this process must be performed manually. You can read more about this change here.

Notably, starting with the February version for On-premises data gateway next year, Microsoft will be using the .NET 4.8 framework. As such, some operating systems may no longer be supported. You can find more information on this here.
