Seagate Innov8 is the world's first USB-powered desktop HDD that offers 8TB of storage

Seagate has announced a new external hard drive called Innov8, which is the world's first desktop hard drive that is powered by a single cable: the one you use to connect it to your PC. As more and more devices come out with at least one USB Type C port, it makes sense to have some great peripherals available that can take advantage of it.

The latest member of Seagate's external hard drive family is an 8TB monster that doesn't need an AC adaptor to be powered, instead relying on the host device - such as a laptop or a desktop - to supply power via a USB Type C port. Even though this drive wouldn't saturate a USB 3.0 connection, Seagate has chosen a USB controller compliant with the newer (and faster) USB 3.1 specification.

The Innov8's enclosure is made of aluminum, features a simple industrial design, and was made in partnership with Huge-Design, who also contributed to the design of the Seagate Seven. Compared to the Seagate Seven - which is a 7mm thin, 2.5 inch drive - the Innov8 is simply a gargantuan expansion drive that will always sit on the desk.

Seagate's Innov8 isn't really cheap - it will cost you $349 - but its 8TB capacity should be more than enough for most users' needs, and it comes with the Seagate Dashboard software for easy backup management. To sweeten up the deal, Seagate is also offering 200GB of OneDrive storage. The drive will be available next month through Seagate, Amazon, and other retailers.
