Motorola is holding an event on September 9, where it is widely expected to be announcing a successor to the Razr, its foldable phone that brings back a wave of nostalgia from the iconic flip phone. According to leakster Evan Blass, it's going to be called the Razr 5G, but the inclusion of 5G connectivity isn't the biggest news.
The biggest news is that Blass showed a blurry picture of an AT&T model. If you're familiar with Motorola at all, then you know that the Lenovo-owned company has a thing for Verizon. It's triumphant return to the flagship space with the Edge+ was a Verizon-exclusive, as was last year's Razr. The Moto Z3 was exclusive to Verizon too, and that was because part of the device's value proposition was the 5G Moto Mod, which, you guessed it, only worked for Verizon 5G.
For those left out in the cold by the original model because of its exclusivity, the news of an AT&T variant is good news. And since Motorola's exclusives seem to always be with Verizon, the existence of an AT&T model hopefully means that there's a T-Mobile flavor as well.
Considering its $1,500 price tag, the original Razr really didn't offer much in terms of specs. It had a Snapdragon 710 chipset and a single-lens 16MP rear camera. A 5G model would likely mean a bump up to the Snapdragon 765.
