Verizon Wireless has been the clear leader in offering "4G" network speeds in the US. While Sprint was first out of the gate with its WiMax network, the company stumbled when it basically ran out of money to expand the infrastructure. Verizon launched its first 4G locations with LTE in late December 2010 and has been very aggressive in adding new US cities over the past couple of years.
Today, Verizon announced that it would add another 34 new cities in the US on Thursday, along with expanding coverage in another 38 markets. Verizon says that this will allow the company to give over 75 percent of the US population access to its LTE network. Verizon has said in the past that it plans to expand that to 97 percent of the US population by the end of 2013.
Meanwhile, Verizon's two biggest competitors, AT&T and Sprint, have been busy building their own LTE networks. AT&T first launched its version in a few US cities in September but its LTE footprint is still well behind that of Verizon's. After abandoning further expansion of its WiMax network, Sprint has been working on its own LTE setup. While it has yet to formally launch, Sprint has been testing its LTE network in places such as northern California.
