Skype Translator celebrates its first birthday with new Brazilian Portuguese support

Skype Translator is one of the coolest projects to come out of Microsoft in the last couple of years. And next week, the futuristic real-time translation tool will be marking its first birthday and to celebrate it's adding support for another language.

In case you’re not familiar with it, Skype Translator is pretty much taken out of our sci-fi fantasies. The Skype Translator app, now integrated into the desktop version of the messaging client, allows for near real-time voice translation between languages. In other words you can speak in English and your conversation partner might hear French. Turn that around and a foreigner speaking French will be automatically translated to English back on your end.

The tool has constantly been improved over the past year, since its public launch. Skype Translator supports Chinese Mandarin, English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish for spoken languages and up to 50 languages for text messaging. And now, to celebrate its upcoming one year anniversary it’s adding support for spoken Brazilian Portuguese.

Skype Translator, and other similar tools, have the potential to change the way people around the world communicate. Many people will no doubt be excited to see what Skype and its competitors achieve in the next year.
