Samsung launches the Galaxy On8

Samsung's Galaxy Note7 flagship has been hogging the headlines for the last few weeks, but the company is continuing to bring new devices to market. The latest addition to its line-up is a new mid-range handset, the Galaxy On8.

Its launch follows that of the Galaxy On5 Pro and On7 Pro in July, promising "dazzling design" and a "faux leather back" - two seemingly contradictory concepts that Samsung nevertheless fused together in the two affordable handsets. The new Galaxy On8 offers somewhat meatier specs than either of those devices, as well as being the first in the On-series to feature a Super AMOLED display.

The Galaxy On8's key specs include:

  • 5.5-inch Super AMOLED with Full HD (1920x1080px) resolution
  • Octa-core 1.6GHz Exynos 7580 SoC
  • 3GB RAM
  • 16GB onboard storage (plus microSD card support up to 128GB
  • 13MP rear camera with LED flash and 1080p video recording at 30fps
  • 5MP front-facing camera
  • 4G LTE connectivity
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 4.1
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • 3300mAh battery
  • 151.7 x 76 x 7.8mm

As SamMobile notes, the Galaxy On8 bears a remarkable resemblance to the Galaxy J7 that Samsung unveiled in April - even the external dimensions of the two handsets are identical. But the two devices do differ slightly in their specs; the Galaxy J7 only has a 720p display and 2GB of RAM, compared with a Full HD screen and 3GB of RAM on the new Galaxy On8.

The Galaxy On8 will go on sale soon in India, priced at Rs.15,990 INR (roughly $240 USD) at Flipkart, and will be available in gold, white and black color options.

The device will ship with Android 6.0 Marshmallow installed, and it's not yet clear when - or if - Samsung intends to offer an upgrade to the newest Android 7.0 Nougat release.
