Microsoft hires former Apple executive for heading HoloLens hardware division

Microsoft has hired Rubén Caballero who was previously the VP of engineering for wireless technology at Apple and was responsible for integrating modem and antennas in iPhones, iPads, and other Apple products.

Caballero has been appointed as the corporate vice president for hardware design and technology at Microsoft since March and he will be working on hardware such as HoloLens mixed reality headset, AI, "special projects," and more. The information comes from his LinkedIn profile and Microsoft itself also confirmed the hiring. The move comes at a time when Apple is heavily pushing into AR/VR and it looks like Microsoft itself is looking to bolster its efforts in this field with this hiring.

At Apple, Rubén was leading the company's transition to 5G before quitting in April 2019 after the Cupertino company and Qualcomm settled their legal disputes and his division was subsumed by Apple's chip division headed by Johny Srouji. He joined the company in 2005 and worked there until 2019. He was one of the founding leaders of the original iPhone hardware team at Apple. After leaving the Cupertino company, Rubén became the technical advisor at many startups including Keyssa and Humane, a startup founded by former Apple employees.
