Google reintroduces "Free App of the Week" section on the Play Store

The Google Play Store recently turned five and has rapidly grown to become one of the largest app repositories for mobile devices. The company has now silently introduced a new section on the Play Store to give away one free paid app. A similar initiative was carried out by the company in the past but was discontinued without any notice.

Android users in the US can check out the "Free App of the Week" section on the Play Store app or on the website to get this week's free app, Card Wars - Adventure Time. In similar fashion, Amazon has been giving away one free app each day through its own app store for quite some time. The company even made a $110 bundle of apps and games available for free to increase awareness of its app store among Android users.

Google's move is likely aimed at users who often ignore paid apps and opt for free alternatives, that are available in abundance on the Play Store. The company hasn't officially revealed the details about the promotional section, and it could be a test run since it is only available in the US currently.
