No Man's Sky has gone through a transformation since its release in 2016 thanks to Hello Games continuing to update the adventure title, which finally received full multiplayer capabilities and an Xbox One release last year.
And today, the studio announced the next chapter in the game's development, Beyond, a trio of free updates that will arrive this summer. While not many details were shared, the studio said the first update will be No Man’s Sky Online, which is described as "a radical new social and multiplayer experience which empowers players everywhere in the universe to meet and play together."
Although this sounds like the current 16-player limit will be replaced by something much grander, the studio said it isn't making the title an MMO all of a sudden, and also confirmed that everything will arrive free to existing players on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
Even still, the developer seems to be aiming rather high with this update, with it saying:
Beyond will be our most ambitious chapter so far, and something we’ve been working ridiculously hard on. We’ll continue to support No Man’s Sky in this way for the foreseeable future.
More information regarding No Man's Sky: Beyond, including Online and the two other components that the studio is keeping close to its chest for now, are slated to be revealed in the coming weeks. Hello Games also announced a new game recently, The Last Campfire, but much like this update, details on that are slim.
