Garmin report finds users logged a record-breaking number of activities last year

Garmin has reported that its wearables customers logged a record number of exercises last year. It said that indoor exercises increased 20.54% compared to 2020 and outdoor activities grew by 9.52% in the same period. The indoor activity which saw the most growth year-over-year was Pilates (108.3%) while gravel cycling (49.55%) grew the most among outdoor activities.

Commenting on the findings, Joe Schrick, Garmin vice president fitness segment, said:

“In the face of ongoing lockdowns and the emergence of new COVID-19 variants, Garmin users logged a record-breaking number of fitness activities in 2021. We already knew that our customers are performance-driven and resilient, and the data proves that even a global pandemic won’t stand in the way of their relentless drive to ‘beat yesterday.’”

The activities in which Garmin saw the biggest increases were Pilates (108.3%), breathwork (82.76%), gravel cycling (49.55%), yoga (45.55%), winter sports (39.16%), walking (37.13%), golf (28.35%), swimming (22.48%), hiking (19.57%), and trail running (11.58%). Garmin said activities logged by its smartwatches grew right across the board including in activities such as boating, bouldering, hand gliding, rowing, and rock climbing.

Aside from activity growth, Garmin also shared data about what each region of the world was doing to stay fit. South America recorded 125.41% more breathwork activities, 87.51% more gravel rides, and 37.6% more trail runs. Western Europe saw an increase of 59.86% gravel rides, 14.52% more trail runs, and 65.57% more yoga activities. Eastern Europe increased its yoga activity by 85.02% and its gravel rides by 66.13%. North Americans did 34.39% more yoga activities and 38.54% more gravel rides. Central Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa logged 217.11% more Pilates activities, 57.53% more gravel rides, and 44.96% more swimming activities. Finally, Central America saw gravel rides increase by 54.59% and swimming increase by 43.98%.
