Google launched Neighbourly in May earlier this year as a beta limited to the city of Mumbai in India. Since its initial beta, the service was silently expanded to seven other cities, such as Coimbatore, Mysore, and Jaipur.
Today, the company announced that it will be expanding the service to Delhi and Bangalore, with a further expansion happening over the next few weeks bringing the service to Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Indore, and more.
Neighbourly attempts to bring online the conversation that happens among families and individuals in a neighbourhood. Google says people have used its service to report things like leakage of cooking gas to asking questions such as “why there are elephants on the street”. Though, most questions relate to asking about where people can find certain products or services in that neighbourhood.
Also coming with this expansion is an update that incorporates some of the most-requested features so far; it is now possible to join multiple neighbourhoods – one for your home and other for your workplace, for example. Questions will also be more personalized now, and those who are most helpful among a neighbourhood will receive a “Top Neighbour” status.
Neighbourly is available via the Google Play Store for devices running Android 4.3 or above – that’s certainly a large range. If the service isn't available in your area, joining the waitlist is perhaps a good idea.
