HP is not releasing a new carrier-locked Elite x3 for Telstra

After an update to the Windows Device Recovery Tool today which added a second variant of HP's Elite x3, many suspected that the company might be offering a carrier-locked model. It is not.

Earlier today, Microsoft updated the Windows Device Recovery Tool to support some new devices. Among them was the 'HP Elite x3 Telstra', fueling speculation that HP might finally be offering its flagship device through mobile carriers.

As it turns out, these hopes were unfounded, as HP has confirmed to Neowin that the newly supported device is simply a variant of the unlocked model that works on Telstra's network.

But for those that love to speculate, you've still got material. This morning's update also added support for two variants of the Alcatel IDOL 4S with Windows 10: the T-Mobile carrier-locked version that's currently on the market, and an 'Open Market' version. We've reached out to Alcatel to find out what if it is indeed releasing an unlocked model.

Of course, you can grab the unlocked Elite x3 from the Microsoft Store in your region. In fact, HP recently released a bundle that includes the device, Desk Dock, and Lap Dock for $1,298 in the United States. If you're thinking about buying either of the above-mentioned devices, you can check out our Elite x3 review here and our IDOL 4S with Windows 10 review here.
