Microsoft giving free game download codes to owners of faulty Xbox One units

Microsoft is giving people who bought Xbox One units that have hardware issues a free game download code to ease the pain a bit. The news comes after some owners discovered that the disc drive in their Xbox One were making loud and strange sounds when a disc was put inside.

Microsoft had previously said they were working with the people who reported those problems to get them a replacement Xbox One "as soon as possible". Now Polygon reports that those same people have received a customer care email from Microsoft alerting them they will also be able to select one free game download from a list of four Microsoft Xbox One titles: "Dead Rising 3", "Forza Motorsport 5", "Ryse: Son of Rome" and "Zoo Tycoon." The normal download price for each game is $59.99.

Microsoft has not offered any specific information on how many people have experienced disc drive issues with their Xbox One units, saying only that the issues are affecting "a very small number of Xbox One customers." There's no evidence that the problems are as serious or as widespread as the "Red Ring of Death" issues that caused a large number of Xbox 360 launch units to overheat when the console launched in 2005.
