A number of military themed web news sites, including Army Times, Defense Times, the Armed Forces Journal and others suffered from a cyber attack earlier this month. According to an article on the Los Angeles Times web site, all of the sites involved in the cyber attack are owned and operated by Gannett Government Media, a division of the Gannett media company that also publishes a number of other web sites and newspapers such as USA Today.
The actual cyber attack on the 12 military news web sites occurred on June 7. However Gannett only released details about what was exposed in the attack on Tuesday. According an email sent to the web sites' readers, personal info such as names, email addresses, user ID and passwords, zip code, the branch of military service a person is in and more was exposed. More sensitive info such as credit card numbers were not taken by the attack. There's no word as to how many people were affected by this latest report on a cyber attack on a web site.
Gannett has told its readers that the company has brought in an "outside computer forensics company to help us investigate and strengthen our controls to safeguard against future breaches." In the meantime the company is telling its readers to be on the lookout for emails that ask for things like bank accounts and Social Security numbers. They also suggest that readers change or improve their passwords as well as be wary of clicking on links in emails that lead to sites that ask for personal info.
