Old MobileMe users get one more free year of iCloud storage

Apple's MobileMe online service shut down on June 30, but well before then, the now former users of MobileMe received free data storage on Apple's iCloud service if they transferred their accounts to iCloud. That free offer was supposed to end on Sunday, September 30th. Now, Apple has unexpectedly decided to give those old MobileMe users a one year extension.

Apple's support page now says that old MobileMe users who moved their account to iCloud between October 12th, 2011 and August 1st, 2012 will continue to receive free storage until September 30th, 2013. There is no word as to why Apple decided to keep this rather nice offer going for one more year.

Just a reminder: The free amount of storage comes in the amount of 10 GB, 20 GB, or 50 GB, depending on how much those former MobileMe customers were paying for the service before Apple shut it down. Those same users will see their free iCloud space go away ahead of the new deadline if they decided to purchase a cloud storage upgrade. If they decide to cancel their upgraded storage plan, they will go back to Apple's free 5 GB of iCloud space. We are betting that those former MobileMe users will stick with the free offer for another year.
