Panasonic announces its rugged Windows 10 2-in-1, the Toughbook 20

Today, Panasonic announced its refreshed Toughbook 20, a Windows 10 2-in-1 that's designed to stand up to extreme conditions. As you can see from the image above, it looks bulky, but it only weighs in at 3.9 pounds, and the screen is detachable.

The original model was launched in late 2015, and one of the improvements is that it now comes with double the storage at 256GB. There's also an upgrade processor, with a Core i5-7Y57. Note that while it ships with Windows 10 Pro, you can get one with Windows 7 as well, although that would come with a sixth-generation chip.

You'll also find an IR camera on the 2018 model, for Windows Hello facial recognition, along with an 8MP rear-facing camera. Pen support is now standard, and there's a new optional magstrip that would allow law enforcement officers to scan driver's licenses.

The detachable PC meets MIL-STD-461F standards for electromagnetic interference, and MIL-STD-810G standards for drop, shock, vibration, rain, and sand protection. In other words, it's pretty rugged.

"When we introduced the Toughbook 20, we knew it would redefine what people expect from a fully rugged device – mobile, powerful and flexible, this was a device the truly reflected how our customers want to work," said Brian Rowley, Vice President of Marketing and Product Management, Panasonic System Communications Company of North America. "Now, with a refreshed processor and even more impressive features, we are excited to show our new and existing customers how the Toughbook 20 will continue to make their jobs simpler and more efficient."

The new Toughbook 20 is available from various Panasonic retailers, starting at around $3,099.
