If you are a person that loves to use the D-pad when playing games, the Nintendo Switch's left Joy-Con might leave you a bit unsatisfied. That is because the D-pad isn't shaped like the more traditional "+" but instead has individual circular buttons for up, down, left, and right. There have been some ambitious mods to convert the buttons in the past but now Hori has unveiled its Joy-Con controller that aims to fix this problem.
While the Hori Joy-Con looks much like the Nintendo variant, it does have a few drawbacks. First and foremost, the Hori unit can only be used when the Switch is in portable mode. The controller also lacks a gyroscope and accelerometer. If that wasn't enough, it also lacks the ability to vibrate and does not have the SL and SR buttons. This is as bare bones as you can get for a controller and some will need to consider the trade-offs when considering this as a purchase.
Currently, there are no plans for a global release. The Hori Joy-Con is slated to make its retail debut in Japan sometime in July and will be priced at ¥2,480 or around $23.50 USD.
